A well-written engagement letter is an important document governing the relationship between a lawyer and a client, helps set expectations of both lawyer and client and can be one of the lawyer’s most effective risk management tools. During this program, Kate will give an overview of lawyers’ ethical obligations to communicate with clients about the scope of a representation, the basis for fees charged and conflicts of interest. She will also provide a thorough discussion of best practices when drafting engagement letters, including guidance for describing the scope of representation and defining limited scope engagements. The program will also provide an overview of other best practices when drafting engagement communications for new or existing clients.
